Potentiometer is a common electronic component in circuit design. Today, I would like to give you a popular science about the classification of potentiometers and the connection mode of potentiometers. I hope I can help you.

What kinds of potentiometers are there?
Potentiometers can be divided into direct sliding potentiometer and rotary potentiometer according to the regulation mode, and can be divided into ordinary potentiometer, precision potentiometer, fine-tuning potentiometer, power potentiometer and special potentiometer according to the use, and can be divided into contact potentiometer and non-contact potentiometer according to the contact mode.

What is the working principle of potentiometer?
Potentiometer is a type of variable resistor. Usually it is composed of a resistor body and a rotating or sliding system, that is, a moving contact moves on the resistor body to obtain partial voltage output. Potentiometer as a variable resistor is recommended to be used as voltage divider, and the load resistance RL of the 3386 potentiometer should be no less than 10 times of the resistance value RT of the potentiometer.

How to connect the potentiometer?
When the trimmer potentiometer regulates the current in the DC current, the current passes through the sliding arm of the potentiometer, and the resistance value will increase abnormally due to anodic oxidation. It is suggested that the terminals connected with the resistor be connected to the negative pole and the slide arm is connected to the positive pole. If the DC current passes through the potentiometer directly, the anode of the potentiometer will be oxidized and the impedance of the potentiometer will be increased. Therefore, it is better to connect the negative current to the terminal contacted with the carbon diaphragm and the positive current to the terminal contacted with the brush (potentiometer contact plate).

Working principle of the potentiometer

The structure of potentiometer: trimmer potentiometer is an adjustable electronic component. It consists of a resistor body and a rotating or sliding system.

The working principle of 3386 potentiometer: When a voltage is applied between two fixed contacts of the resistor, the position of the contacts on the resistor can be changed by rotating or sliding system, and a voltage related to the position of the moving contacts can be obtained between the moving contacts and the fixed contacts. It is mostly used as a voltage divider. Potentiometer is basically a sliding rheostat. There are several types of potentiometers, which are commonly used in speaker volume switch and laser head power adjustment. Potentiometer is an adjustable electronic component. It consists of a resistor body and a rotating or sliding system. When a voltage is applied between the two fixed contacts of the resistor, the position of the contacts on the resistor is changed by rotating or sliding system, and a voltage related to the position of the moving contacts can be obtained between the moving contacts and the fixed contacts.

The function of trimmer potentiometer is to regulate the voltage (including DC voltage and signal voltage) and the magnitude of the current.

More important technical parameters in potentiometer

The main parameters of the potentiometer are nominal resistance value and allowable deviation (error), rated power, maximum operating voltage, stability, noise electromotive force, high frequency characteristics, resistance variation law, etc.

Rated power refers to the maximum power allowed on the two fixed ends of the potentiometer. The rated power is not equal to the power of the center tap and the fixed end.

Standard resistance value: In order to facilitate production and use, the state uniformly stipulates a series of resistance values as the standard value of resistance value of resistors. These series of resistance values are called the nominal resistance value of 3386 potentiometer, i.e. the resistance value marked on products, which is similar to the series of resistors.

Resistance allowable error grade: The error range between measured resistance value and nominal resistance value can be allowed to be ±20%, ±10%, ±5%, ±2%, ±1% according to different precision grade. The accuracy of precision potentiometer can reach ±0.1%.

The variation law of resistance value refers to the relationship between resistance value and sliding contact rotation angle (or sliding stroke). Generally, there are linear (B), logarithmic (A) and exponential (C).

Linear potentiometer is generally used as voltage divider, logarithmic potentiometer is usually only used for tuning control, while exponential potentiometer is usually used for volume controller in radio, tape recorder, record player and TV.
